Gainesville Compost is a small company that produces organic, compost fertilizer from vegetative food scraps that it gathers from food businesses and households throughout Gainesville and sells it in three quantities.
Compost is the concentrated byproduct of biodegradation that gardeners have prized since time immemorial. It is a completely natural, non-chemical, very rich fertilizer that is locally made from materials that have degraded so completely that it has very little smell. It is the same fertilizer that nature has made since the dawn of time on and in the ground from dead plant materials that feeds all plant life on earth.
To be as environmentally responsible as possible, Gainesville Compost staff members use "bicycle trucks," or bicycles with large trailers on them, to transport raw materials to their processing facilities that are scattered throughout Gainesville and to transport finished and packaged compost to retail outlets and directly to customers.
At their processing facilities, they inoculate the food scraps with live biodegradation microorganisms and they add industrious earthworms. After several weeks of ideal conditions of moisture and aerification, the "magic" of composting transforms the unsightly food scraps into biologically rich, low-odor, natural fertilizer. The staff members of Gainesville Compost sift the the material to remove foreign objects and to make the material uniform in texture. Then, they package the finished compost in plastic buckets.
Besides crumbly, rich compost, Gainesville Compost also sells worm casting tea, the rich, liquid leachate suspension from worm waste, that gardeners can apply to plants and soil. Gainesville Compost also sells earthworms that most efficiently convert soft, organic wastes to compost in the north-central Florida climate with which gardeners can produce their own compost.
You can buy the compost and compost tea of the company at Ward's Supermarket (http://www.WardsGainesville.com), the Union Street Farmers' Market (http://www.UnionStreetFarmersMkt.com) in downtown Gainesville on Wednesday evenings from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and at the Alachua County Farmers' Market (http://www.441Market.com) at the former vehicle inspection station at the intersection of Northwest 13th Street and Northwest 34th Street on Saturday mornings from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.. Alternatively, if you want staff members to deliver compost, compost tea or earthworms to you or if you produce a stream of soft, compostable materials that you would be willing to provide to Gainesville Compost, contact Chris or Steven.
